After a national search, led by former CITYterm faculty member, Darren Wood, The Masters School and the CITYterm faculty are thrilled to announce Cotter Donnell as the next Director.
In his application for the Directorship, Cotter wrote:
I know that CITYterm is dedicated to the kinds of values and projects that have inspired and challenged me throughout my career: innovative teaching and assessment, authentic and transformative learning, opportunities for inquiry and discovery, genuine collaboration, and a steadfast commitment to helping young people to take ownership of their learning and live lives of meaning and purpose. Taking on a leadership role at a program like this fulfills career-long passions, and is an honor.
Cotter brings a deep understanding of the type of learning we do at CITYterm; he is poised to lead and strengthen our unique program when he becomes the Director this July.
Cotter comes to us with over 15 years of experience at independent schools, most recently serving as Dean of Studies at the Polytechnic School in Pasadena, California, providing oversight of the curriculum and faculty evaluation process, and working with the three divisions to support ongoing faculty professional growth. Cotter has also served as a department chair and an upper school grade-level dean. He has extensive experience in classroom teaching, outdoor education, and global travel. He has also been the assistant coach for the boys’ and girls’ varsity and JV cross-country teams.
Prior to working at Polytechnic School, Cotter taught English and History at the Chadwick School in Palos Verdes Peninsula, California. He also worked for the Swiss Semester program, serving as an English teacher and dorm parent in Zermatt, Switzerland. These experiences and others make Cotter excited to get back to the world-as-classroom that defines the CITYterm experience.
Ellie, Cotter’s wife, and their two children will move into the CITYterm dorm this summer. The whole Donnell family is sure to be a fantastic addition!
